Medicines that you cannot export from the UK or hoard

Your child may become irritable and have mood swings, and even revert to earlier childhood behaviour, such as temper tantrums. Any they do encounter are temporary and will stop when the course is complete. Corticosteroids cause growth retardation in infancy, childhood and adolescence, which may be irreversible, and therefore long-term administration of pharmacological doses should be avoided. If prolonged therapy is necessary, treatment should be limited to the minimum suppression of the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal axis and growth retardation.

• Increased intra-ocular pressure, may suppress reactions to skin tests.
• Risks may be higher with high doses/systemic exposure (see section 4.5), although dose levels do not allow prediction of the onset, type, severity or duration of reactions.
• Possession of Class C drugs carries a maximum sentence of 2 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
• If there is lack of a satisfactory clinical response to prednisolone, the drug should be gradually discontinued and the patient transferred to alternative therapy.

Teratogenic effects of glucocorticoids have not been demonstrated in the human. Although malignancies are known to arise in patients undergoing immunosuppression with corticosteroids, any role of these compounds in the induction of tumours remain uncertain. The classic toxic effects of prednisolone like drugs are given under adverse reactions.

Is there anything else I need to know about this medicine?

Make sure your child drinks it all straight away, using a medicine spoon or oral syringe. Give the medicine at about the same time each day so that this becomes part of your child’s daily routine, which will help you to remember. In nephrotic syndrome, the kidneys leak protein into the urine (wee).

• Although concomitant therapy with salicylate and corticosteroids does not appear to increase the incidence or severity of GI ulceration, the possibility of this effect should be considered.
• This is most likely to be a steroid medicine called prednisolone.
• Do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor.

You shouldn’t save these units up to drink all in one go, so try to spread your units across the week and have some alcohol-free days. If you’re using a steroid cream it’s fine to have vaccinations, but you’ll need to tell the person giving you the injection to avoid the area being treated with the cream.

Stopping a longer course of steroids

Side effects of cancer drugs

Live vaccines are made using weakened, live bacteria or viruses. In general, you shouldn’t have live vaccines while you are on steroid medication and for 6 months afterwards. This is likely to be longer (at least 24 months) if you have had a stem cell transplant.

Let your medical team know how you are feeling so that they can help to manage these side effects of steroids. If your side effects are severe, they might lower your dose of steroids. Steroids are chemical messengers (hormones) that are made naturally in your body. The type of steroids most commonly used in the treatment of lymphoma are corticosteroids.

A recent review compared the effectiveness and safety of oral and intravenous steroid treatments for people with MS. The review found that both treatments appeared to be equally effective and safe. To prevent the effects of long-term treatment, many MS teams will therefore give you no more than three courses of steroids in one year. The NICE MS Guideline also recommends that steroids should be started as early as possible and within 14 days of the onset of relapse symptoms. Methylprednisolone can irritate the lining of your stomach and cause side effects like heartburn or indigestion.

Corticosteroids

These groups of drugs includes ibuprofen, diclofenac (voltarol) indomethacin, celecoxib and etoricoxib. They are commonly prescribed for the control of pain, especially joint pain and can be very effective. They should be used with legal bodybuilding steroids caution as they commonly have side effects and can interfere with other prescribed medication. Even the drugs available without prescription can cause problems and patients should discuss with their medical team before taking them.
